Happy Birthday to Wikipedia!

While surfing vnunet.com, an information-packed website, I came across many interesting news. One is that Wikipedia has completed 7-years of existence on January 16, 2008. I have been regularly using it, almost daily, yet I did not know this. I could have said Happy Birthday on January 16, 2008. Sorry I missed it.

As you all may probably be aware, it is the world’s first open source, free encyclopedia, and one of the top 10 most-visited sites in the Net. It has currently over nine million pages of information written in over 250 languages, covering almost the whole gamut of human knowledge. As of this minute, it has 2,471,741 articles in English alone.

Wikipedia has provoked Google, another favourite of mine, to come up with something to rival it today, namely, KNOL. <

http://knol.google.com/k/knol#>. This type of competition is really healthy and we the users benefit by it the most.

As a lover and frequent user of Wikipedia, I am very glad to say Happy Birthday to Wikipedia! Better late than never, what you say!

Many thanks to vnunet for the information.

Google launches KNOL!

Knol is Google’s answer to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. But there are differences. Each article in Knol is a Treasury of authoritative articles on specific articles by experts, whose is furnished.

What causes low back pain?
What are risk factors for low back pain?
What is the prognosis of low back pain?
How should low back pain be evaluated?

Dotcom World-7: "A Computer Edge for the Classroom Blackboard" by Sandeep Joshi

A Computer Edge for the Classroom Blackboard
Panaboard marries PC and Internet
by Sandeep Joshi

First there was the blackboard, used by generations of teachers for classroom instruction. Then came the whiteboard, which said goodbye to chalk and dust. Now it is ‘Internet inside’ as whiteboards become interactive, latching on to a PC and a Net connection.

Panasonic brought to India the “Panaboard”, an interactive whiteboard that allows direct display of the contents of a computer screen onto the board – actually6 a 77-inch-diagonal screen for high-impact presentations.

It enables users to run their own software applications for school lessons or even business presentations. Windows applications like PowerPoint and Excel, or educational software, can run on the Elite Panaboard. It also features book software to write or draw onto the screen, add notes, diagrams, text and images.

The Elite Panaboard comes with an electronic pen, which allows smooth mouse-like operations. The bundled Panaboard book application enables easy lesson preparation and contains Panasonic’s tools for creating and editing teaching materials.

Panasonic Asia Pacific’s Business Head Ajay Madan says: “It is a challenge in itself for any presenter to engage an audience. Elite Panaboard offers a helping hand to such users and provides them with a solution to enhance their presentations and make them more effective and engaging.”

The made-in Japan product is priced at Rs.1.35 lakh in India. It was developed and extensively tested with help from teachers in Australia.

Dotcom World-5: "IT Finishing School to start working soon"

IT Finishing School to start working soon
It will hone skills of students to make them employable.
Special Correspondent, The Hindu

Chennai: The IT Finishing School in Chennai will start functioning in a month, and the ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu in this quarter, Information Technology Secretary, C.Chandramouli said on Thursday (July 3, 2008).

He was addressing the inaugural session of Nasscom HR Summit 2008.

Later talking to reporters, he said most of the companies started the training process only after recruitment. This resulted in cost overrun and delay in project implementation. To address this problem, the State government launched several initiatives in colleges and universities.

According to Mr.Chandramouli, the IT Finishing School would act as a pre-employment training centre to hone the skills of both engineering and non-engineering students to make them readily employable.

Except 6-7 districts, computer centres were ready in all other districts. Each centre would have around 25 computers, and the students would be trained for three months. “Many companies have come forward to run these centres. We had three rounds of discussions with them and will start allotting them the districts soon,” he said.

As for the ICT Academy, he said it was an industry initiative. It was floated as a not-for-profit society. The Centre had allotted Rs.6 crore for this project, and the companies would contribute an equal sum. The State would play the role of an enabler. The board would comprise a Vice-Chancellor, the Education Secretary, the IT Secretary, CEOs and IT professionals. Initially, it would focus on the development of curriculum for various disciplines and train faculty and students. A portal would be set up to offer students distance education.

Dotcom World-4: "Software by Subscription" – AP

Software by Subscription:
Microsoft can now offer programs as “services” on Web

Microsoft will begin selling its Office programs to consumers on a subscription basis starting mid-July, in a bid to reach thrifty personal computer buyers who would otherwise pass on productivity software.

The move may set the stage for Microsoft to offer its consumer-oriented programs as “services” over the Web, by acclimatizing people to the pricing model such a shift could require.

The software bundle, which includes Microsoft’s Live OneCare computer security software, will be sold at nearly 700 Circuit City stores for $70 per year.

Bryson Gordon, a group product manager for the Office group, said the agreement with Circuit City Stores is not exclusive, and that the bundle will be available at other retailers and on PCs sold by the likes of Dell in future.

Subscription pricing for software has become commonplace in businesses but is a relatively new concept for consumers. The Microsoft Equipt bundle – formerly code-named “Albany” – includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, plus OneCare and a handful of existing free Windows Live applications. Buying those programs the traditional way would cost about $200, and then consumers who wanted to replace the software with the next version, Office 14, would have to pay the full price. – AP.

Dotcom World-3: Microsoft emerges Winner in Reputation Study (Special Correspondent, The Hindu)

U.S. software-giant Microsoft has topped the list of most reputed companies in India, followed by Infosys and State Bank of India(SBI). Intel, Maruti Suzuki and TCS take the next three spots on the reputation front, says the ‘Corporation Reputation Manager’ study conducted by global market information and insight group, TNS.

The study, considered to be the annual barometer of corporate reputation in India, further says that the Tata group features strongly in the top 12 list with TCS, Tata Steel and Tata Motors. Looking at performance within specific sectors, Microsoft leads in the technology sector, SBI in the financial services sector and Maruti Suzuki in the automobile sector. In the engineering and infrastructure, Reliance leads while Nestle edges Hindustan Unilever for the top position in FMCG. The TNS study says Reliance Communications and Hindustan Petroleum are the leaders in telecom and petroleum sectors, while Ranbaxy occupies the top slot among pharmaceutical companies and LG Electronics leads the way among consumer durables.

According to Muder Chiba, ED, TNS India: “As companies become valued beyond last quarter’s financial results, and as corporate valuation shifts from a focus on physical assets alone, building and retaining corporate confidence becomes key.”

Dotcom World-1: ‘New e-mail addresses from Yahoo"

Yahoo on Thursday (June 19, 2008) tripled the size of its globally-popular free online e-mail service by adding two domains as options to “yahoo.com” addresses.

The introduction of “ymail.com” and “rocketmail.com” as Yahoo e-mail address options comes as the Internet firm strives to convince investors it is on a path to reclaim faded glory and eroded revenues.

Yahoo Mail is the most popular web-based e-mail in the world. Its profitable, advertisement-supported service has approximately 266 million users, according to industry statistics.

Adding new domains is intended to let users who have outgrown or never really liked their yahoo.com e-mail addresses to have chances at better choices.

“We recognize that people want an e-mail address that reflects who they are,” said Yahoo Mail vice president, John Kremer. “We have a lot of user Ids out there and it is pretty crowded. We want to remedy that and make sure users get the ID they want.”

Free e-mail addresses are typically assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. This means newcomers choosing yahoo.com Ids are unlikely to get their prime choices when signing up.

A Harris Interactive study commissioned by Yahoo concluded that 70% of adults w0ould select an address that includes all or part of their names.

Yahoo says the rocketmail and ymail choices are meant to give another chance to email users saddled with addresses such “CutiePie4ever80” or “Mary2455”.

“A happy user is one that stays around and is a Yahoo user for life.” Mr.Kremer said, “If you have an e-mail address that is your name at ymail, that becomes part of your identity.”

Yahoo expects users to readily recognize “ymail” because it is used for a version of the e-mail customized for mobile devices.

Rocketmail has a “hip retro feel” because it is a resurrect3ed e-mail address that belonged to a company Yahoo bought in 1997, according to Mr.Kremer. “This adds millions and millions of new Yahoo accounts out there for users. Effectively, we are tripling the size of the Yahoo name space.” – AFP
