Health Warnings-8: "SUGAR, A Sweet Poison"

Modern therapeutics recommend restriction on the consumption of sugar for the purpose of maintaining health. Ayurveda and Naturopathy recommend avoidance of sugar from diet. Harmless substances like honey and fruits should be substituted for sugar. Jaggery is produced from sugarcane juice. White sugar is also produced from sugarcane juice through modern process. Considering their nutritious elements, sugarcane juice is more beneficial to health than jaggery, but white sugar has no role as a nutrient.

One of the causes of good health of our ancestors was the absence of white sugar in their diet. They maintained health and energy because they obtained as much fructose as they wanted from raw food, vegetables and fruits. Professor John Yudkin of England has minutely studied the effects of sugar in human body. He states that there is no physiological requirement of sugar. The calories and energy required for the body are easily available from fruits, vegetables and grains.

The constitution of our blood is alkaline. So dietitians advise us to eat edibles containing minerals. Sugar and sweets, after digestion, leave acidic residue in the body which is harmful and injurious to health. The chemical process made upon sugar for whitening and purifying it destroys its nutritious properties. There is little or no amount of vitamins and minerals in sugar.

The consumption of huge amount of white sugar has led to diseases like dental decay and caries, diabetes, cardiac trouble and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). The reckless use of sugar leads to migraine, dermatitis and renal disorders. Moreover, sugar increases the amount of cholesterol in the blood. Cholesterol accumulates in the inner surface of the arteries which consequently become narrow and hard. The heart has to work vigorously to push blood into such narrow arteries. Consequently, the heart becomes exhausted and weak. Sometimes it fails.

Thus, the excessive use of sugar has adverse effects on health. Not only that, it also interrupts the smooth functioning of the body and the mind and leads to various diseases. That is why sugar is considered a SWEET POISON by dietitians.

Health Warnings-5: "Disadvantages of the Animal Protein"

1. Meat is not only very high in fat and cholesterol but contains horrendous levels of chemicals, antibiotics, pesticides and female hormones, all of which get stored in the animal muscle which we eat.

2. The animals do not graze freely or exercise and this increases the saturated fat levels in their flesh.

3. A high-level of meat in the diet is known to cause the loss of many nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, vitamins B3 and B6. It increases free radical activity and acid levels, and it could lead to cancer.

4. Osteoporosis is more prevalent in those eating meat, mostly because of the raised acid levels in the diet. This indirectly causes the loss of bone calcium.

5. Purines, which cause gout, are very high in meat, and they also cause the destruction of healthy bowel micro-organisms which maintain so many important functions.

6. Eating meat does lead to early rapid growth, but equally it causes early rapid aging due to free radical activity and damaged genes.

7. The high protein content of meat calls for a lot of digestive enzymes, which stresses the pancreas. If large quantities of these enzymes have to be produced for digestion then less may be available for the destruction of cancer cells.

8. Menstrual problems are also often due to excessive fat from animal sources, and this can prevent oestrogen clearance from the blood, with consequent PMT problems.

Health Warnings-4: “Mass consumption of medicines harms than heals: cardiologist”

The increasing “medicalisation” of society is spawning a culture of mass consumption of medicines that harms rather than heals mankind, B.M.Hegde, cardiologist and former Vice Chancellor of Manipal University said on Sunday, August 17, 2008 at Chennai.

Delivering a lecture as part of a series of golden jubilee medical lectures organized by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Dr.Hegde said this medicalisation was a product of the unholy alliance between modern medicine and the pharmaceutical industry.

Dr.Hegde’s talk was on “Life Span, Life Expectancy and Longevity – What is the doctor’s role?” If Caesarian sections represented medicalisat5ion of birth, the artificial prolonging of life with ventilator support was nothing other than the medicalisation of death, he said.

Citing studies and articles from reputed medical journals that critiqued the direction modern medicine was taking, Dr.Hegde said pharmaceutical industry had virtually grabbed the reins of the practice of modern medicine and dictated its direction.

Health Warnings-3: “Asbestos Roofing Harmful”

Some schools in the city have asbestos roofing. Asbestos exposure is prone to fatal diseases like mesothelioma or lung cancer. It is very dangerous for the children who inhale the asbestos dust. The time-limit between asbestos exposure and disease onset is longer in many cases. Although institutions are aware that asbestos sheets can be replaced with other substitutes like glass fibre, carbon fibre and organic fibre, the alteration is not done. The school authorities must take the matter seriously. – K.Aravind, Pazhavanthangal, Chennai

Health Tips-19: "Beware of Synthetic Milk"

Milk is a staple food for the children and the infirm. Of late, there are reports that a synthetic product is passed off as ‘milk’. The ‘synthetic milk’ simulates the creamer or dairy whitener added to tea or coffee for persons to whom milk is contra-indicated for allergic or other reasons. Dairy whitener is composed of fat (commonly hydrogenated fat or derivative of palm oil) and emulsifier (synthetic or natural). Emulsified fat in water is milky. Soaps and detergents are capable of emulsifying oil or fat in water. The mixture becomes an oil-in-water emulsion. The synthetic emulsifier used in creamer is approved for food purposes. Soaps and synthetic detergents are not of food grade. Detergents are made up of petroleum jelly. The ‘synthetic milk’ sold is an emulsion of an oil in water with the aid of soaps or detergents, thickened by addition of urea. True milk contains protein (casein), sugars (lactose) and minerals (calcium). Urea, though a nitrogenous compound is not protein, neither it is edible. In fact, it could be toxic. Urea is a product of protein metabolism in animals and is excreted in urine. Synthetic milk can be easily detected. First of all, soap or detergent in water is alkaline due to hydrolysis. A litmus (red to blue) or pH paper (orange to green) test will indicate this behaviour when the strip is dipped in the liquid. Urea is detected by adding an ureas tablet into a sample of milk. Ureas is an enzyme, which decomposes into ammonium carbonate, which may be identified by its characteristic ammoniacal smell or alkaline nature by pH indicator. These qualitative tests are fairly simple and can be performed even by an untrained person.

Health Tips-17: A/c Room and Respiratory Problems

People who work in air-conditioned offices suffer more than twice as many respiratory problems as those who work in naturally-ventilated buildings, according to a study by a French Medical Research agency. The study could help explain the ‘sick-building syndrome’, widely reported in air-conditioned offices in Europe. The researchers say that the recirculated air carries bacteria and fungi that spread the infections.

Health Warnings-4: "Job Satisfaction and Health"

Recent investigations have revealed that inner disconnectedness is a significant factor in producing disease. For example, medical research has discovered that the most powerful predictor of heart attacks in men under the age of fifty is not high cholesterol, nor high blood pressure, nor smoking, but JOB DISSATISFACTION. When men do not feel a meaningful connection to their work, it can kill them. I see this as a manifestation of soul loss: a ‘soulless’ connection to work. It is very stressful to live without a meaningful connection to our lives and our activities, and it is well established that stress is a significant cause of disease – Dr.A.Allina, M.D. (Source: Unknown)

Health Warnings-3: ‘Supplements of Calcium can raise Heart Attack Risk’ – DPA

Older women in New Zealand have been advised to stop taking calcium supplements, acknowledged to protect their bones, after a study found it could raise the risk of heart attack.

A trial run by Auckland University’s bone research group found the supplements caused a 40% increase in heart attacks, the Sunday Star-Times reported.

Ian Reid, the professor who directed the study, said women over 70 who had been on the trial were recommended to stop taking extra calcium, especially if they had a history of heart or kidney disease, pending further investigations. About 1,500 women took part in the trial, which was funded by New Zealand’s Health Research Council.

Reid told the appear that three other international studies on calcium supplements had since been reviewed, and all showed varying degrees of elevated risk of heart attacks, ranging from 10 to 20%.

“When you put four studies together, you need to take it more seriously,” he said.

“This is potentially very important because there are so many people around the world who take calcium supplements.” Reid said the study found calcium supplements dramatically reduced older women’s risk of bone fractures and bone density loss.

“But heart disease kills you, whereas bone disease can, but it is not quite so lethal.”

Health Warnings-2: "Effects of Noise Pollution"

While levels and dangers of noise pollution are well-documented and everyone knows what an irritant and stresser noise is, what is lesser known is that chronic noise can cause:

Mental distress
Ulcers
Migraines
Acidity
Non-cooperative behaviour
Aggression
Learning impairment
Musculo-skeletal problems
Heart problems
Tinninitus or a ringing sound within the ears (even when there is no noise in the surroundings)

It can hamper performance and productivity.

Chronic noise also affects interpersonal relationships.
